Teachers Rock on CBS Friday

To contact us Click HERE

On Friday CBS will air Teachers Rock, a tribute concert celebrating teachers and education. The benefit concert has live performances by Garth Brooks, Dierks Bentley, Fun. and Josh Groban and special appearances by Viola Davis from “Won’t Back Down”, Josh Hutcherson, Miranda Cosgrove, Pauley Perrette, and many more. Proceeds from Teachers Rock will benefit three non-profit organizations: DonorsChoose.org, Feeding America and Teach for America.

My daughter and I attended the concert last night, and it was really amazing. It's so great to see teachers getting a little credit for their job. If you have an amazing teacher in your life you can nominate them for the Teachers Rock Wall of Fame, and let them know how appreciated they are. Every day from now to September 20th one nominee will be inducted and they will receive a $500 gift card.

It really was a great night, and a wonderful opportunity to honor teachers and spotlight three great charities while enjoying a great concert. If you watch Friday you can look for me, I think you can see me in the background when they honor a teacher in the audience toward the end of the show.

See you there!

Homeland on Showtime

I know I am late to the Showtime series Homeland party, but I have to jump in late and say how great it is now. I had thought it would be like every cop show, where there is a new crime every week and Homeland security would solve it. But I couldn't have been more wrong.

Each episode unfolds more of a mystery that takes so many sharp turns it's difficult to accurately guess what will happen next. Luckily, I was able to get a copy of the first season and devoured it immediately. If you missed the first season too you have a full month till Homeland returns September 30th.

The DVD of season 1 comes out August 28th, so get it preordered and catch up. I promise you're gonna thank me.

Doctor Who returns to BBC America

Doctor Who Season 7 is back on BBC America Saturday, September 1st! Woo Hoo!

I had heard rumors, but this morning I got an official press release for BBC America. There will be five new episodes, beginning with Asylum of the Daleks. All the incarnations of Daleks will apparently be present. Daleks are bad enough, and now there are crazy ones.

Enjoy this trailer till next saturday!

Boardwalk Empire returns to HBO

Boardwalk Empire is finally coming back to HBO September 16th. I've been dying to see how Nucky will deal with his new life. I'm guessing we will see a lot more blood and guts as we sink deeper into the gangster era and prohibition.

I'm excited to see the addition of Bobby Cannavale (most recently on Nurse Jackie) as Gyp Rosetti. New characters and from the looks of things a very different Nucky are bound to take the show in a fresh direction. For my sake though I hope it doesn't get too graphically violent.

If you need to catch up or just refresh your memory you can find season 2 On Demand and HBO Go.

Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood premieres on PBS this Monday, Labor day. I like to think that I recommend the best television has to offer here at Elise's Ramblings and I believe you should get your kids started early watching quality shows.

Daniel is a spin off of Mr Rogers, and has all the same great educational and social emotional messages for your young children. You may even pick up a few parenting tips.

If your kid really likes the show you can also find a Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood app where kids play with Daniel Tiger as he goes about his everyday activities, learning life’s little lessons along the way in the games “Doctor Daniel,” “Daniel's Bedtime” and “In Daniel's Bathroom.”

The Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood: Play at home with Daniel  App is available for $1.99 for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

GIVEAWAY: Jamaican Coconut Water

Coconut water is not new, many countries including Jamaica have had them in retail stores for years, but it has only recently taken off in the US when US companies started marketing their electrolyte-packed, hydrating qualities (and overpricing them at Whole Foods ...). They also have a version with pulp, for those of you who (like me) also like their OJ better with pulp.
They are giving out a six-pack consisting their three different coconut water products to one of my readers. Here's how to enter:1. Leave a comment below with your email address so we can contact you if you win.2. Get an extra entry by tweeting "Try Jamaican Grace coconut water with this giveaway from @gourmetpigs: http://bit.ly/RZP9Vx"

LA Loves Alex's Lemonade Returns Sept 29

To contact us Click HERE
There are plenty of food charity events in LA, but LA Loves Alex's Lemonade is still one of the best out there with famous chefs arriving from all over the US to raise funds to fight childhood cancer.
The chefs and restaurants that participate in this event do not skimp, as evidenced by the raw bar with oysters, uni, and crab at last year's event
Michael Cimarusti from Providence was previewing his new casual restaurant, Connie and Ted's, with the best clam chowder I've ever had. I'm still waiting for this place to open so I can have this again!

Let's Talk About Luxury: The Macallan's £10 Bar at The Montage Beverly Hills

To contact us Click HERE
The names Macallan and The Montage Beverly Hills are already synonymous with luxury, but the £10 Bar is on another level. This Macallan exclusive bar is by-reservation only and has a $50 minimum per person. It's not hard to meet the minimum with the prices. The 12-year old Macallan aged in sherry oak is  £10, and the price goes up from there. Luckily I was there as Shop Eat Sleep's guest on her hosted media visit.
IMG_9833But I had to do a double take when I saw a $64,000 drink on the menu. Yep. I did say this bar was on another level of luxury, right? The 64-year-old Macallan goes for $64,000. That's for a glass/shot, by the way, but hey, they have the last two ounces of this stuff left on earth.
IMG_9824That beats the special Royal Marriage edition which was $12,000 for a whole bottle.
We sat outside since it was a nice day. Quiet, breezy, overlooking the garden and fountain. It is certainly a nice place to hang out and chat.
IMG_9820
Of course, we had to order some Macallan. Our server told us that the sherry oak whisky tends to be smoother and fruitier. If you prefer something oaky, go with the ones in the fine oak section where the whiskies were finished in a bourbon barrel. For the smokier ones, there's the Highland Park line. So. When you order whisky here, they will bring you the four different ice options. There's the whisky soapstones, the ice cubes, specially made ice balls, and the one he most recommended - the ice ball made with Highland Springs water.
IMG_9826
They actually ship water from Scotland to make these ice balls, no joke. It's supposed to be best since it's the same water used to make the whiskies. Even the "local" ice ball is no ordinary ball: it has the £ logo carved inside of the ice.

Eating and Riding Around Knott's Berry Farm

To contact us Click HERE
I've been invited to many restaurants and food events, but every once in a while something fun and different comes along, like an invitation to Knott's Berry Farm! OK, so the invite was to come to a tasting of their food offerings around the theme park, but I have to admit the opportunity to ride roller coasters was a major draw for me. Knott's Berry Farm isn't just known as a theme park, but their fried chicken and pies were what started the whole enterprise. Mrs Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant started in 1934 and attracted so many tourists that they started building shops and attractions around it to entertain waiting guests. So it really was the food that started the theme park!

The most famous food here of course is the fried chicken from Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner in the MarketPlace area, where they still serve the original recipe from 78 years ago. I actually have never had the fried chicken up until now, despite having lived in LA for almost 10 years. Verdict: they're quite good and hit the spot.
During the tasting I also tried the chicken pot pie, which also turned out to be really good. Flaky crust with creamy filling!

Road Trip Food (Yellowstone): Cowboy's Lodge and Grille (Gardiner, Montana)

To contact us Click HERE
On my last trip to Yellowstone, we flew into Bozeman, Montana and drove 1.5 hours to the North entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Feeling hungry on the road, we decided to stop in Gardiner, Montana for a bite, but most restaurants were closed in between lunch and dinner service. Luckily, Cowboy's Lodge and Grill was open.

Being cold, I had to order a cup each of their gumbo, chili, and the ranch hand stew ($4 for a cup). I've had better gumbo elsewhere but the other two were hearty and really hit the spot.
If you ever find yourself looking for food in Gardiner, Montana, I recommend the stew here!I had to order the bison steak since I was in Montana (it's on all the menus here, pretty much) but here it turned out to be pretty tough (a bit overcooked) and pretty expensive ($28), especially compared to the stew and chili! The cobbler ($3) was unfortunately disappointing, with canned peaches and mushy crust.Despite the disappointing steak and cobbler, we were happy with our stews and chili and were just glad to find a place to eat here between lunch and dinner service! Not too bad of a first meal at Yellowstone.

If you ever wanted a crash course in early silent film, TCM has it for you on Thursdays in September, with producer and director Mack Sennett films and shorts. He was arguably the original King of Comedy.

Sennett's great stars included Mable Normand, Fatty Arbuckle, and Charlie Chaplin, not to mention the timeless Keystone Kops. You may remember he is depicted in the film Chaplin by Dan Aykroyd.

TCM will show 4 films and 83 shorts. You can get a peak from the trailer below.

LA County Fair Food

To contact us Click HERE

September is almost here and that means that the Los Angeles County Fair is coming.  Travelling amusement park rides with my daughter.  Shopping for gadgets with deals that beat theinfomercials.  Cows, goats, chickens andpiggies.  And the food.

A friend and I were invited to preview some of the food thatwill be available at the Fair this year. Chicken Charlie.  Largepictures drew us in, of bacon wrapped Dodger dogs, a chicken sandwich made withcrispy crème donuts, and deep fried frogs legs.  We split a Dodger dog that was battered andfried and placed in a bun.  It was aperfect beginning to our Fair food experience. Later we tried their pineapple shrimp, which had extremely deliciousshrimp, salty rice, and pineapple chunks served in a hollowed out pineapplehalf.  My favorite of the night.  Their deep fried cookie dough balls servedwith chocolate syrup and powdered sugar, were very delicious.

Tasti Chips.  Servesfreshly fried potato chips (gluten free) and onion rings.  We loved the onion rings, which had theperfect amount of batter and were fried to perfection.

Harold & Belle’s to Geaux serves “Fine Creole Food”, andwe both devoured small bowls of their crawfish etouffee, with a large ratio ofcrawfish tails in a rich sauce served with rice.  Delicious. They have a restraunt near the corner of Jefferson and Crenshaw, and Ilook forward to making a visit.
Pink’s. We were treated to the Daytona Dog. Ketchup, spicymustard, onions, jalapenos, and GUACAMOLE!. Their hot dogs are always good, and this guacamole dog is worth a try(the Pink’s chili cheese dog is still my favorite).
10-pound Buns.  Alarge thick slice of their sourdough bread loaded with cheese and a choice oftoppings.  This stand has been a favoriteof mine for several years now.
Big Kona Hula Shaved Ice. My friend had a banana, rootbeer and condensed milk shave ice.  He said it was delicious, and it sure lookedgood.
We each had a low calorie beer (Michelob Ultra) from SkinnyGirl Bar and Food.  Shared a BloomingOnion.  Had funnel cakes and soft serveice cream.
The L.A. County Fair starts Friday 8/31/12.  Go for the food!
This post is the first By Mr. Elise's Ramblings, John Derby. He is a fair expert, who goes every year and even took me there on one of our first dates. What can we say it's a family tradition!

Waiting waiting waiting for season 6 of Mad Men. Here's a funny video to pass the time. I loved the good byes.

If you need more Mad Men, I saw there is a Jon Hamm interview on BBC America's Graham Norton Show. You can find it On Demand.

Hopefully we will have an announcement soon about the return date for season 6. I believe the show is set to run through at least season 7, so this could be the second to last season. I can't even imagine what I'm going to do when there is no more.

Season 5 DVD will be released October 16th. Maybe they'll announce the season 6's start date then....

Savor the Midsummer Cocktails and Patio at Big Bar (Los Feliz)

To contact us Click HERE
It's September but it still sure is warm. That means you still have time to head over to the Big Bar in Los Feliz for their midsummer cocktails, designed to be the perfect patio drinks! Big Bar is part of the Alcove Cafe and Bakery and yes, they have a beautiful patio that you can sip them in, although we enjoy sitting at the bar watching Dan Long and his bartenders do their work.
IMG_1139A few weeks ago I made my first visit to Big Bar and tasted through the midsummer cocktail menu. Here are some highlights from the menu:

I loved the Gin and Tonic cocktail.
IMG_1158
This was obviously not your usual gin and tonic, as you can see it's served up. The cocktail was made with Beefeater gin, quinquina, lime, bergamot, kaffir lime spray. the quinquina gave it that "tonic" flavor. You can also smell the kaffir lime as he is serving it to you.

The next one may be my favorite find that night. I can sip this one all night!
The Picon Punch is made with Amaro Montenegro, Pierre Ferrand 1840, lemon, grenadine, orange bitters
IMG_1164The Picon Punch is a traditional Basque after dinner drink. Traditionally it is made with Picon but that's not available in its original form anymore so they tried to find a substitute with similar flavors. The base is Amaro so it had strong herbal flavors, but if you like that flavor profile you will love this. I thought it was really perfect to calm your tummy after dinner.

Of course, you have to try a cocktail named Most Interesting Cocktail in the World, made with Vida mezcal, lime, cinnamon syrup, Miracle Mile chocolate-chili bitters, cayenne peppers

Try This New Rosé Flavor from Le Bon Garçon Caramels!

To contact us Click HERE
A while back I raved about Le Bon Garçon, the only caramels I ever really LOVED because it's so smooth, melts in your mouth and never sticks to your teeth.
Le Bon Garcon
Well, for a limited time they have a new flavor, Rosé, made with raspberry, lychee and rose essence.
You can easily tell which one is the Rosé from the color, since unlike the others that are caramel colored, the Rosé is reddish!
IMG_1359Nutty and sea salt caramels are pretty common these days (although Le Bon Garcon's handmade versions are still the best), and Le Bon Garcon's seasonal fruit flavors stand out. The Rose is noticeably fruity but not as tart as the mango-passion, a great option for those looking for a little something extra in their caramel treats!
